Position Summary:

The primary responsibility of the NSC Press Editor is to manage the creation and revision of printed and electronic technical manuals and books. Specific areas include pre-production, such as working with authors/writers, and production and post-production including hiring and managing copyeditors, designers, proofreaders, and indexers for all National Safety Council Press products. The NSC Press Editor is also responsible for acquiring supplemental materials, writing monthly email newsletters to professors and students, and managing the editorial advisory board. Secondary responsibilities include revenue growth initiatives, inventory management, and execution of some marketing tactics. Works with executive director to develop product sales strategies and growth opportunities.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Ensuring that NSC Press editorial is clear, concise, concrete, and engaging.
  • Editing for punctuation, grammar, and style in all products.
  • Providing balanced, technically accurate, error- and typo-free copy.
  • Writing expressive subheads and other copy.
  • Manage marketing budget and propose necessary adjustments as needed to meet revenue goals 
  • Hire and manage freelancers to ensure NSC Press products remain on schedule.
  • Create and track schedules for all NSC Products from development through post-production.
  • Solicit and develop a base of superior writers and authors from various geographic regions and act as a handler to keep them on schedule.
  • Prepare annual product development budget for new books (freelance costs), create office requisitions for vendors, approve invoices from vendors.
  • Create and meet with an advisory panel of college professors on a quarterly basis to assist/lead new book ideas.
  • Responds and communicates with professors and book purchasers to solidify relationships and encourage customer loyalty
  • Maintain knowledge of general book publishing trends and applying that knowledge to the NSC Press book line.
  • Develop and solicit new book proposals based on market data and reader trends.
  • Keep up with and implement the latest in electronic publishing, and recommending new software and other equipment as needed to lower costs and simplify procedures.

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English, Communications, or Media required. 
  • 3-5 years’ experience in publishing/production required
  • Excellent critical thinking skills for project-based decisions. Areas include: technical review issues, editing, scheduling, product direction and application, and printing issues.
  • Ability to interact with internal staff and external constituents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and spreadsheet applications required.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
  • Time management skills a must.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to plan and motivate people to maintain schedules.
  • Analytical ability and critical thinking skills.
  • Technical book experience preferred.
  • Understanding of design programs and effective book design.
  • Some knowledge of HTML and web programs is preferred.
