Reporting to the Art Director of University Marketing and Communications (UMC), the Graphic Designer serves as an integral member of the UMC team to support the development and delivery of marketing and communications collateral related to institutional identity, in-house client support, and brand development.

The Graphic Designer works in a highly integrated team environment to create high-quality original layouts and designs for a variety of traditional print media, web pages for the Internet as well as emerging multimedia used to enhance the institution’s visual image as part of the UW Oshkosh’s University Marketing and Communications efforts – ensuring production quality at all stages of the timely delivery of marketing materials and online publishing.

  • Design and prepare high-quality original layouts and designs for a variety of media used to enhance the institution’s visual image.
  • Design and prepare for output various high-quality marketing materials, including ads, posters, brochures, postcards, e-mail marketing and university print and digital publications.
  • Design and layout for the University’s external-facing website, along with individual departments’ sections of the site as needed.
  • Demonstrate a full range of advanced graphic techniques using software, such as Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Digital Publishing Suite.
  • Strive to incorporate UW Oshkosh’s visual identity and images to maintain a unified, branded and consistent look across publications, other media outputs, and websites.
  • Interact with University Marketing and Communications staff and University clients to determine project requirements and priorities to ensure timely production of marketing materials.
  • Coordinate with the print purchasing manager to prepare electronic files appropriately for output and to meet production deadlines.
  • Gather information from clients, internal and external vendors and team members in order to prepare jobs for completion. Track status of jobs internally and when jobs go to print. Be responsible for the job from start to finish.
  • Monitor progress and manage time to complete assigned projects by deadline. Work collaboratively with the art director and design team to ensure the delivery of high-quality marketing materials in a timely manner to campus clients.
  • Offer constructive critiques of other designers’ and design students’ work when called upon to help create an atmosphere of creative brainstorming to meet the University’s need for a positive, dynamic visual brand. 
  • Assist design students as needed by mentoring on design principles and technical issues. 
  • Execute last-minute changes on projects and review proofs as needed to keep production schedules on time. Perform administrative functions to support graphic design work. 
  • Maintain project files and project tracking in paper and electronic forms in an efficient and timely manner. 
  • Keep computer and other graphic equipment well maintained and running smoothly. (The graphic designer is primarily responsible for tech support of his or her own computer.) 
  • Assist in the maintenance of supplies inventory. 
  • Other duties as assigned by the Art Director.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • At least 1 year of professional experience as a graphic designer.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles and techniques used in publication layout and design, including the use of type, color, paper, composition, graphics and photography to create high-quality publications and other image-enhancing materials.
  • Expert skills in using Macintosh or equivalent hardware and software as well as appropriate software programs, especially—but not limited to—Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Acrobat.
  • Understanding of offset printing techniques and limitations as related to parameters for designing print materials and preparing them for output.
  • Thorough understanding of web and responsive web design and the specifications for file output necessary for “going live.”
  • Effective and timely project tracking and record-keeping skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team atmosphere.
  • Ability to multitask and keep numerous projects moving forward to ensure completion in a timely manner.
  • Strong communication skills, which are, clear, effective and sensitive, whether in person, by telephone or in writing.
  • Experience in project management. Gathering content, images, specs, and deadlines in order to prepare jobs for completion.
  • Account liaison experience. Building relationships with clients and being the first contact for potential and current clients.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in graphic design or related field.
  • Knowledge that supports the creation of interactive, multimedia design, including— but not limited to—Adobe Digital Publishing Suite, animated gifs, Dreamweaver, and experience with a content management system.
  • Color correction skills.

Compensation: $15.00-$17.00/hour
