We are hiring a Principal Internal Communications Specialist to work in our Corporate Group. This is an exciting role that will be responsible for designing and implementing strategic and tactical communications plans, in partnership primarily with the HR Centers of Expertise and CHRO (Chief Human Resources Officer), to engage and inspire action in employees as it relates to Human Resources programs and initiatives. Provides integral support, primarily to the HR Centers of Expertise, as they work to develop and implement programs for 85,000+ employees globally, and in support of the Medtronic Mission, especially Tenet 5 “To recognize the personal worth of employees by providing an employment framework that allows personal satisfaction in work accomplished, security, advancement opportunity, and means to share in the company’s success.” Acts as dedicated communications counsel to overall Human Resources and assigned projects. This position reports to the Director of Internal Communications—Human Resources, with responsibility for working directly with a variety of HR leaders and project teams.

A Day in the Life:

  • Advises, supports and effectively partners with the Director, and HR Vice Presidents and teams, as well as Corporate Communications, business units and functions to create and deliver high-impact, engaging communications to employees 
  • Leads the creation and implementation of highly visible communications campaigns that support Human Resources strategies and programs. 
  • Provides communications counsel and planning to create strategic and tactical elements of campaigns and messaging, including developing messages and online, and print materials in support of HR programs. 
  • Supports overall Human Resources strategic imperatives through consistent messaging to employees, including developing a Human Resources message platform aligned with the corporate branding messages. 
  • Develops measurement approach for evaluating campaign and message effectiveness. 
  • Writes articles, scripts, talking points and presentations. 
  • Serves as point person for the HR “landing page” linked to the Corporate Intranet site on behalf of HR (coordinating with SMEs, etc.) 
  • Provides mechanisms and forums (calendar, Communications Council) that brings together communicators across HR functions to develop more cohesive and coordinated messages and timing of HR campaigns. Identify best practices/templates and practices that can be shared across HR Communicators—e.g., channel practices, effective use of digital platforms, and how a plan for coordinating HR content across functions–and coordinates HR with Corporate Communications platforms (intranets, etc.) 
  • Creates editorial guidelines and content plan for HR News & Information. Produces 2 issues/month and special issues when needed. Fact check, coordinate with SME submitters. Creates content to support HR strategies (e.g., interviews with HR leaders.) Serves as managing editor for coordinating content that goes to other corporate channels and business and regional channels 
  • Coordinates with cross-functional teams, as appropriate, to share key messages and strategies 
  • Applies innovative thinking to solve complex problems and complete assignments that are often ambiguous.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements -

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • 7+ years of experience in professional public relations or communications role (5 years with Masters) 
  • Experience in planning and implementation of strategic and tactical communications plans 
  • Project management experience 
  • Experience partnering with and managing external vendors and/or working with internal Creative teams.

Nice to Have:

  • Master’s Degree in Communications, Journalism or Public Affairs
  • Experience working in a variety of mediums, including print, digital, social, broadcast
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills
  • Ability to translate complex ideas and themes into plain language that employees understand
  • Understands the role of communications in driving results and aligning, inspiring and engaging employees
  • Knowledge and understanding of both traditional and emerging communications channels, including social media
  • Healthcare industry experience is a plus
