Purpose of this Position:

The Special Events and Marketing Assistant is responsible for logistical coordination of the numerous Science Education Resource Center (SERC) and National Association of Geoscience Teachers (NAGT) workshops and meetings locally and nationally 10-100 participants), including the annual Earth Educators’ Rendezvous (300+ participants).

The Special Events and Marketing Assistant also works closely with the Program Manager to support the implementation of all of SERC’s marketing strategies on behalf of SERC and NAGT’s overarching mission to improve undergraduate geoscience and STEM education. The Special Events and Marketing Assistant is responsible for NAGT and SERC advertising sales.

Essential Job Functions - Responsibilities:

Plan and coordinate workshop logistics including catering, hotel/dorm blocks, ground transportation, workshop materials, etc.)

Serve as main point person for logistical planning and coordination for the annual Earth Educators’ Rendezvous conference.

Assist with coordinating and promoting activities and events including workshops and presence at major academic conferences (AGU/GSA).

Develop and implement NAGT advertising sales including:

  • Manage the ad process (submissions, deadlines, follow up and ad specs).
  • Identify, contact and recruit potential clients.
  • Promote advertising and marketing materials and strategies.
  • Create and maintain client accounts.
  • Research and analyze Internet sales and advertising trends.
  • Gather and organize information to help with decision-making regarding media placement, campaign length, featured products and services, and technical details.

Assist in marketing, outreach, publicity and award nominations for SERC, NAGT, and SERC’s numerous collaborating projects.

Additional Job Responsibilities:

  • Writing assignments as appropriate.
  • Other tasks as assigned

Required Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to independently manage and complete multiple projects on schedule and to deal patiently with changing priorities.
  • Strong organizational skills including ability to track multiple elements progressing through a complex process.
  • Ability to think creatively, critically, and strategically while moving forward defined and loosely defined tasks.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills including demonstrated ability to write ad copy and news stories (a writing sample is required).
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, documentation and organizational skills; ability to accept criticism and manage conflict; ability to follow through with stakeholders and colleagues.
  • Comfortable with online tools including authoring, social media, publishing, and distance collaboration.
  • B.S. or B.A. degree, 1-3 years previous experience in marketing and/or communications.
  • Ability to work both independently and to function as a respected team member with faculty, administrative, and staff colleagues.
  • Team-oriented and collaborative.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with advertising sales particularly in related sectors.
  • Experience with higher education and faculty communications.
  • Experience working in higher education and/or nonprofit sector.
  • Comfortable with online tools including authoring, social media, publishing, and distance collaboration.
