PRIMARY OBJECTIVE:

Write creatively in a variety of voices and styles for a variety of media and audiences to help achieve the reputation/branding goals of the college.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organize, plan, write, proof and edit the print and digital versions of the college magazine – working collaboratively with designers and faculty/student/staff/alumni contributors.
  • Write and proof internal and external marketing materials, promotional collateral, email copy, website content and online advertising.
  • Edit the online course catalog in partnership with colleagues across campus.
  • Assist the Director of Media Relations and work with the college’s media relations consultant to develop and pitch stories to obtain positive coverage in national and regional media.
  • Review and edit important correspondence for the president.
  • Implement an effective multi-media content strategy for a variety of audiences including prospective students and their parents, current students and their parents, high school counselors, alumni, donors, faculty and journalists.
  • Must be available for occasional evening and weekend work.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Maintain effective, collaborative relationships with the entire communications team.
  • Develop and maintain strong, positive working relationships with Lawrence staff, faculty and students.
  • Work closely with internal clients to understand their goals, provide expert advice and produce effective content in a timely manner.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Exceptional proofreading skills and expert grammarian.
  • Thorough knowledge of AP Style.
  • Demonstrated organization and project management skills.
  • Unrelenting attention to detail and deadlines.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a team and independently.
  • A self-starter who appreciates the value of integrated communications in support of a brand strategy.
  • Knowledge of the liberal arts is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Drupal, Informz email, WordPress and WorkZone is a plus.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, a strong work ethic and a positive, upbeat, professional attitude.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications or equivalent work experience preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience writing and editing collateral material, magazine articles, web content, promotional email, press releases, speeches, etc. in a corporate, agency, higher education or journalistic setting.

Final candidates will be asked to complete a proofreading test as part of the selection process.
