Position Overview:

The assistant editor/writer writes and edits university publications, including Marquette Magazine, Discover Research at Marquette, college magazines, and other high-level communications. The assistant editor / writer is a key contributor to university publications, fielding writing assignments from long form features to shorter news items. In addition, the role assists with the planning and oversight of publications, including project management, collaborating with designers and photographers, proofing and copy editing, and coordinating contributions from writers and contributors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Write for and co-edit university publications, including Marquette Magazine, Discover Research at Marquette, college magazines and other feature-length publications.
  2. Serve as editor for unit-specific or smaller publications and projects as assigned.
  3. Proof and edit publications and marketing collateral produced by the Office of Marketing and Communication to reflect appropriate messaging, quality and conformance with university style.
  4. Assist with publication management as assigned, including establishing timelines, collaborating with designers and photographers, and coordinating contributions from campus departments or external writers.
  5. Maintain a beat as part of the OMC beat system.
  6. Collaborate with OMC colleagues on the digital publication and promotion of stories from publications.
  7. Collaborate with OMC colleagues in the creation of new content for digital channels as opportunities arise.
  8. Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree 
  • The ideal candidate will have a minimum of three years of experience with knowledge of editing, journalism and reporting, editorial direction, freelance writer management, and best practices in publishing. 
  • Microsoft Office Suite Adobe Creative Suite, especially Adobe InCopy 
  • Microsoft One Drive and SharePoint 
  • Apple computer and MacOS operating system 
  • Broadcast e-mail systems 
  • Google Analytics or professional web traffic analysis programs.
