The Communications Manager is part of a team responsible for planning and implementation of communications activities that advance the goals and success of the District Council in Dane County while adhering to approved plans and budgets. 

Areas of Responsibility include:

  • printed newsletter writing and production (5 times/year)
  • fundraising event support
  • collateral materials production
  • website maintenance
  • advise and assist on Society member communications
  • assistance with communications strategy and planning
  • Other activities may be periodically required, including implementation of social media content, email campaigns and advertising.

Specific duties include:

  1. Editorial planning, writing, editing, layout and print/mailing coordination of newsletters
  2. Editorial planning, writing, editing, layout and print/mailing coordination of direct mail pieces.
  3. Planning, writing, layout and print coordination of collateral materials (brochures, handouts, large-format displays, and “swag.”)
  4. Participate in communications, branding, marketing and advertising strategy and planning 

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, English, journalism, advertising, public relations or other communications related discipline.
  • Equivalent communications experience in a related field may be considered. Five or more years of demonstrated success in a similar position at a non-profit, human services, charity or faith-based organization

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Demonstrated excellence in writing
  • Ability to coach and participate in idea and tactic generation with multiple in-house clients
  • Mid-level ability to use Creative Suite programs, especially InDesign and Photoshop
  • Ability to use major social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) 
  • Knowledge of WordPress to make immediate and routine updates to SVdP website
  • Knowledge of print production preparation and process
  • Ability to take photographs for print and electronic use
  • Effective and sensitive verbal and written communication skills that are kind and respectful, and welcome inclusion to build consensus-driven action
  • Ability to work well with clients, volunteers and staff members that represent diverse social, ethnic, cultural, age and SES groups
  • Amenable to representing and fostering the communications interests of a mission-driven, faith-based non-profit organization
  • Experience working with outside contractors and vendors for design and production services 

Knowledge and Skills Desired:

  • Experience as a member or support staff to organizations with boards, committees and volunteers
  • Experience working with older adults, volunteers and people living with low-incomes Advertising purchasing, development and evaluation experience
  • Direct mail purchasing, development and evaluation experience

$40,000 to $43,000 per year, with health, life and retirement benefits. Sick leave and paid time off included.
