Reporting to the External Communications Lead, the Communications Associate will support the organization’s public relations efforts. The Associate will be responsible for understanding the media landscape and effectively inserting UL into the conversation. This role requires a mix of editorial and project management skills, along with the communication and interpersonal skills to build strong relationships across functional roles and business divisions globally.

The ideal candidate will be an inquisitive learner who possesses excellent editorial and communication skills. This candidate will have experience in creating content (digital/editorial) for a diverse range of audiences and is an enthusiastic adopter and user of digital communications technology (including social media channels). The candidate will be skilled at communicating with colleagues across functions and demonstrates the ability to ask questions, solve problems and bring tasks to completion. This role will be required to help develop and coordinate media relations strategies to support key programs and initiatives, including identifying opportunities and the best methods for promotion. Additionally, this candidate will be interested in and keep abreast of best practices and communications industry trends, in order to best support the business strategy.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with members of the news media and partner organizations. 
  • Develop and update press releases, Q&As, presentations, executive bios, fact sheets, video scripts, website content and other collateral as needed. 
  • Conduct media outreach and assist with coordination of print/TV/radio interviews, feature stories, onsite media filming, press conferences, etc. 
  • Assist in responding to inbound media inquiries in timely fashion. 
  • Maintain database of key media contacts and influencers. 
  • Collaborate with internal marketers and external PR agencies to implement public relations programs. 
  • Help develop social media strategies and posts focused on identified priorities. 
  • Assist with coordination of updates and improvements on the corporate website, UL.com. 
  • Coordinate photography and video for/of events, activities, etc. for use in publications, media, etc. and ensure appropriate releases are signed and filed. 
  • Gather stories from staff for use in internal and external communications.

Qualifications:

  • University Degree in Communications, Journalism, Business Administration or a related field. 
  • Demonstrated writing, interpersonal, and problem solving skills.
