The Communication Specialist is responsible for assisting assigned departments in developing effective strategic communications plans, and for the creative development and implementation of communications about WEA Member Benefits (Member Benefits) personal insurance and retirement and investment programs to achieve corporate and department objectives and provide outstanding customer service to participants, Wisconsin Education Association Council members, school districts, union leaders, and internal staff.

The Communication Specialist works to ensure messages are consistent with the overall brand and meet company standards to maintain and promote a positive image on behalf of the organization.

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

45% - Assist in defining, prioritizing, and implementing effective strategic communication plans that aid in meeting the organization’s mission, goals, and objectives.

Consult with departmental management staff on long term communications strategy, content, and delivery and provide them with advice on alternative, more effective strategies or messages by keeping current on changes and trends that impact the industry. Work with management staff to provide expertise on effective packaging of Member Benefits programs that promote the organization’s brand and mission. Develop, disseminate, and evaluate information about communications and marketing activities. Work as a team and with other program areas to create coordinated marketing communications with current and prospective participants. Assess and measure the effectiveness of communications and the developed communications plan.

40% - Assist in the development, production and distribution of communication tactics to educate relevant publics

Work collaboratively to create clear and accurate content for a variety of communication channels including in-house publications, print, online, video, or face-to-face communications tactics within a regulated (compliant) industry. Create, manage, and maintain an ongoing Public Relations campaign. Develop news releases, event promotions, and other announcements. Maintain a comprehensive communications calendar for web content, news, advertising, and social media. Seek out interviews with members, staff, and industry experts in order to help tell the Member Benefits’ story through the experiences of its core constituents, write and publish regular testimonials, articles, blog posts, web content, etc. Utilize current and new technologies to maintain monthly web analytic reports and assess the effectiveness of these communications, as well as assist in investigating and implements new digital advertising opportunities. Maintain organization’s Social Media sites including Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn. Acts as a liaison to external communications service providers, vendors, etc.

15% - Assist staff to ensure all written communications to customers are consistent with Member Benefits’ mission and goals, certificates, practices and intent, and regulatory requirements.

Review and provide feedback on the content and layout of letters, articles, and other communications.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE: 

Successful experience writing, designing and formatting print/electronic and other communications for mass distribution. Knowledge of financial and personal insurance industry concepts and terminology or the willingness and ability to learn. Knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize the standard and advanced features of Microsoft Office Suite as well as desktop publishing and graphic design software such as Adobe Creative Suite. Familiarity with HTML, customer relationship management software, website content management systems (Wordpress), and e-mail marketing services (Mailchimp). Knowledge of social and digital media and how to incorporate these tools into internal and external communication plans. Knowledge of Member Benefits products and service or the willingness and ability to learn.

ABILITIES REQUIRED :

Proven excellent written communication skills using appropriate tone, grammar, and word usage to clearly and concisely explain complex ideas in a manner that: Communicates messages consistent with Member Benefits’ policy, plans and provisions; Is easily understood by various audiences; And motivates recipient to take specified actions. Excellent verbal communications skills, including the ability to effectively and persuasively communicate with individuals and groups and the ability to listen effectively. Strong dedication to customer service; the ability to remain flexible and adaptable to meet the demands of internal clients and demonstrate enthusiasm and passion for their business. Ability to define, prioritize, and implement effective strategic communication plans. Ability to multi-task and maintain high performance under extreme pressure in a dynamic, fast paced, collaborative environment. Ability to edit written communications for clarity and conciseness, and to provide counsel to the Member Benefits’ staff on their specific written communications projects. Ability to perform market research and analytics. A talent for creative thinking and problem solving. Ability to follow critical business processes to ensure quality and timely execution of initiatives. Ability and willingness to work non-traditional business hours as needed in order to meet deadlines or facilitate and attend offsite conferences. Other duties as assigned.
