The Creative Director serves as a leader in Integrated Marketing Communications, supervising the design team and setting the creative vision for a wide range of marketing materials, including print and digital ads, brochures, postcards, catalogs, PowerPoint presentations, and reports. He or she collaborates with the IMC writing team, digital team, account management team, and diverse clients, maintaining creative quality and enforcing UW-Madison brand standards. The Creative Director cultivates the professional development of design staff members, monitors trends and technologies to ensure best practices, and oversees workflows and timelines. As part of the IMC management team, he or she helps to ensure efficient work processes and to align marketing efforts with division goals.

Reporting to the IMC Director, the Creative Director is responsible for:

Creative Strategy (50%):

  • Provides creative oversight of IMC marketing materials to meet brand standards and achieve the highest-quality product
  • Collaborates with fellow managers to align the work of Integrated Marketing Communications with the mission of Continuing Studies
  • Contributes creative expertise to comprehensive marketing plans developed for a variety of credit and noncredit educational offerings, including degree programs, individual courses, certificate programs, conferences, and Summer Term
  • Cultivates relationships with colleagues across campus to monitor best practices

Creative Production (25%):

  • Contributes hands-on design work
  • Works with internal and external printing services to produce marketing materials

Team Leadership (20%):

  • Supervises the design team (currently three members in a growing organization) to meet targeted objectives
  • Ensures that design team stays up to date on technology and trends
  • Ensures that the design team works effectively with the writing team, digital team, account management team, and wide-ranging clients
  • Directs professional development for design team members

Degree and area of specialization:

Bachelor's degree required (most relevant academic fields include marketing, advertising, journalism, communication arts, graphic design, or related fields)

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

  • Seven years of professional experience, with increasing responsibility, in marketing, advertising, journalism, communications, or a related field managing creative processes and project teams in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-oriented environment 
  • Outstanding design skills across multiple platforms that consider strategic outcomes 
  • A thorough understanding of branding and brand enforcement 
  • Fluency in developing brand style guides 
  • Outstanding editing and proofreading skills 
  • Expertise with the Adobe Creative Suite 
  • Experience developing different styles of custom design work for a variety of audiences
  • Ability to pitch creative concepts, lead the creative briefing process, and share design rationale in a compelling manner with clients and stakeholders 
  • Listening, communication, and collaboration skills to work effectively with a wide variety of constituencies across departments 
  • Experience managing through all phases of projects, including planning, scope and timeline management, project implementation, and evaluation 
  • Proven ability to coordinate multiple, simultaneous projects in a detail-oriented environment and contribute to the success of the entire team 
  • Experience supervising design staff 
  • Ability to mentor design staff so they are invested and engaged 
  • Proven experience in learning from data and evaluation results to inform decision-making
  • Proven experience as a collaborative, thoughtful, open-minded, adaptive problem-solver
  • Proven ability to be self-directed and to work both independently and collaboratively 
  • Proven ability to work with diverse internal and external audiences with energy, collegiality, patience, passion, curiosity, and a sense of humor

Candidate may also have one or more of the following desired but not required qualifications:

  • Experience with project management software 
  • Professional experience in higher-education
