The Wisconsin Union is a financially self-supporting division of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Financial support for the organization is provided by income earned by dining units and a variety of non-food units such as recreation, guest rooms and space rentals. Substantial support is also provided by student fees. The Wisconsin Union has an annual operating budget of $56 million and employs nearly 250 full-time staff and 1500 student staff in the departments of Program & Leadership, Hospitality Services, Facilities, Administration and the Office of the Director. In addition, over 300 student volunteers and 2,000 club members under the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) produce over 2,000 programs annually.

The Creative Services Manager is responsibile for the creative direction for all projects flowing through the marketing department. This position oversees graphic design and production materisl produced by the department. The department is responsible for the marketing and promotion of the total Union program including the Union's premier self-supporting dining and hospitality operation, a hotel operation, indoor and outdoor recreation programs, a large catering business, a performing arts venue and over 2,000 programs annually planned by student-run Wisconsin Union Directorate committees.

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

  • Minimum of three years experience of professional graphic design experience in an in-house marketing department or advertising agency is required.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Demonstrated achievement in diversity and inclusion goals and a commitment to enhancing multicultural understanding in a diverse campus environment.
  • Knowledge of the principles and processes used in graphic design and the production of final electronic art including proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Lightroom and Photo Shelter.
  • Experience in a Macintosh computer environment is required.
  • Traditional and computer illustration skills.
  • Experience and knowledge in website design, development, and maintenance including HTML and web software application programs.
  • Strong interest in and good working knowledge of social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Linked In, etc. as marketing tools and vehicles to create online communities.
  • Experience in brand development. Manage and protect Union brand and sub-brands as needed.
  • A strong work ethic including the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to successfully manage a high volume workload with shifting priorities.
  • A working knowledge of offset printing processes and techniques.
  • An understanding of the University community as a unique setting for social education, and specifically, Wisconsin Union Graphics, as a learning laboratory for students. A knowledge of, and sensitivity to, current student concerns and interests, sensitivity to multiculturalism and diversity issues, ability and desire to work with a wide variety of people, including students, employees, volunteers, professional staff, faculty and alumni.
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively with students and non-student employees, student volunteers, professional staff, faculty and vendors.
  • Skill in leadership and supervision resulting in an engaged workplace.
