The Office of Strategic Communications & Advancement (SCA) for the College of Letters & Science at UW-Madison communicates College-wide priorities, policies, and achievements to many groups, including L&S departments, schools, and programs, alumni, donors, students, University Relations, Business Engagement, and partners within the University of Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA). The Office develops and implements an integrated communications and advancement strategy in support of College-wide and unit-specific objectives.

The Creative Services Specialist will serve as a member of the College's Office of Strategic Communications & Advancement (SCA) team and will report to the Assistant Dean. This colleague has primary responsibility for conceptualizing, designing, and developing a wide range of digital, electronic, and print materials to support the communication, marketing, and advancement endeavors of the College of Letters & Science and its departments, programs, centers, and institutes.

Principal Duties:

60% Digital and Print Creative Design

  • Conceptualize, design, and develop a wide range of digital, electronic, and print-based communications and marketing materials including reports, newsletters, presentations (including PowerPoint), brochures, cards, posters, email communications, displays, and other materials, as needed.
  • Improve and maintain modern standards and best practices in user interface/user experience design for the College's products.
  • Develop and create engaging graphics for use in the College's products.
  • Stay up-to-date on current trends involving design for web, mobile, desktop, tablet, and video applications and implement best practices.
  • Manage creative aspects of communication projects to support the College's communication, marketing, and advancement needs.
  • Manage projects from conception to completion for the College and its units, working with College and University colleagues, alumni, students, and vendors.
  • Manage time, materials, and vendor pricing to stay within budget allocation.
  • Create and uphold visual quality and strategic brand alignment.
  • Ensure compliance and cooperation with University design standards.

15% Website Management

  • Manage and implement the development, strategy, brand identity, and day-to-day maintenance of the College's website.
  • Provide creative support and resources for the College's departments, programs, centers, and institutes and advise on best practices for delivering more effective website content.

10% Media Support

  • Provide photography and video support for the College.
  • Maintain and edit image and media files.

10% Analytics

  • Develop and employ relevant analysis and metrics to demonstrate the effectiveness of communications and to drive measurable outcomes.
  • Analyze and refine processes in order to achieve continuous improvement.

5% Other Related Work

  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as may be assigned by the Assistant Dean of Strategic Communications & Advancement.
  • A bachelor's degree is preferred in graphic design, communications, marketing, advertising, or a related field.  
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience in a multi-project, digital and print graphic design environment is required. A minimum of five years is preferred.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Experience with HTML, CSS, and digital accessibility standards; UI/UX principles and best practices; and content management systems such as WordPress.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator) and MS Office.
  • Ability to create engaging graphics and templates for digital, electronic, print, and social media communications.
  • Photography and video production skills preferred.
  • Excellent interpersonal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, take initiative, work independently, and self-start.
  • Ability to navigate a complex academic community, including the ability to build bridges and strong collaborative relationships with a range of internal and external stakeholders to achieve objectives.
  • Ability to develop strategy, messaging, and positioning.
  • Ability to compile and evaluate analytics.
  • Ability to communicate design concepts to others who do not have formal design training.
  • Excellent ability to work as a positive, inspired, collaborative team member with colleagues in the University, College, and in the College's units.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of the purpose and mission of the College of Letters & Science.
