Originally opened in 1916 as a shipping and recreation facility, this 102-year-old Chicago landmark showcases more than 50 acres of parks, restaurants, attractions, retail shops, sightseeing and dining cruise boats, exposition facilities and more along Lake Michigan.

Established as a nonprofit in 2011, Navy Pier (NP) is a world-class public place that celebrates and showcases the vitality of Chicago and provides for the enjoyment of over 9.2M annual guests. Navy Pier is managed within a business framework that provides for its long-term financial stability and is being transformed into a contemporary, environmentally responsible urban space.

Navy Pier has a 28-member collaborative Board of Directors, 55 full time and up to 400 part-time and seasonal employees as well as up to 200 union trade employees. It is home to 5 nonprofits, nearly 80 businesses and offers more than 250 free programs including public art installations, seasonal programs, year-round cultural programs and events. In 2011, Navy Pier appointed Marilynn Gardner to President & CEO and she quickly built Navy Pier’s culture to include ‘always put the guest experience first’as well as ‘be forward-thinking’and deliver as‘a team’.

SUMMARY:

This is a full-time Digital Content Specialist position. This position reports to the Senior Communications Manager to assist in the management of digital content and website maintenance for Navy Pier. The Digital Content Specialist’s duties will include creating and managing content for the entire Pier with an emphasis on commercial, community and nonprofit aspects of Navy Pier’s Partners and to manage the day to day maintenance of the website.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The duties and responsibilities listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required to successfully perform this job. Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct Research: When creating content, content specialists conduct research to enhance their content. This may also include identifying relevant topics, fact-checking, and analyzing sources to generate information. 
  • Write and Edit Content/Storyteller: After researching, content specialists write content. You will maintain an appropriate tone of voice in your writing, adhering to Navy Pier’s brand style guide. Be creative. When editing, content specialists check for errors in grammar, punctuation, and style. 
  • Create Content Strategies & Produce Content: Create content that is in line with our key persona segments and brand strategy. You will target content to specific audiences and look for content that is in demand. This may involve conducting market research or employing SEO strategies. 
  • Maintain Editorial Calendars: Content specialists adhere to strict deadlines, ensuring that quotas are met. They maintain the editorial calendar by scheduling due dates and tracking content through the editorial process. 
  • Responsible for owning and maintaining all aspects of navypier.org. 
  • Quickly and accurately create and optimize landing pages using our content management system to support promotions and launch of new products/services/programing. 
  • Review and monitor our site and content on an ongoing basis with the goal of identifying ways to improve and/or modify site functionality to better serve our guests. 
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest industry developments and generate new ideas to draw guest’s attention. 
  • Act as our email marketing specialist (CRM solutions) with the creation of email marketing template/ campaigns including external and internal communications, always analyzing, testing and optimize for audience growth. 
  • Conduct site audits, qualitative research, competitive analysis, user testing, review site metrics (Google Analytics), monitor online chat service to formulate and implement A/B tests in order to improve guest experience and conversion. 
  • Lead and implement additional analytics tools/tracking to better understand user behavior and identify bottle necks in order to improve our web/mobile experience. 
  • Report on key website performance metrics; collaborate with the marketing strategy to identify, monitor and report on campaign/promotion performance and provide recommendations on future campaigns. 
  • Complete additional tasks and projects as assigned by manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

The minimum level of knowledge, skills, and/or abilities required for this role include:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in English, communications-related field, marketing, web management, or a related field.
  • Experience: Minimum one to two years of experience in communications field, producing written content for a brand, and web management emphasizing travel/tourism and or hospitality.
  • Preferred: Experience or familiarity in tourism site/attraction, destination management association, non-profits and/or cultural institutions.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Content specialists have an eye for detail. They are adept and finding content that appeals to their consumers, and they produce accurate, high-quality work. 
  • Computer literacy – understanding the landscape of online communications from working in Microsoft Word to using content management systems, content specialists are familiar with computer systems and software, and frequently use search engines to conduct research. 
  • Writing proficiency – to write and edit with speed and accuracy, displaying a strong knowledge of English grammar and the ability to create clear, engaging, and informative text. 
  • Organizational skills – organized and efficient, content specialists maintain calendars and juggle deadlines, keeping track of content throughout the editorial process and ensuring that work is submitted on time. 
  • Marketing knowledge – content specialists understand how to market their content; familiar with industry trends, they use the appropriate strategies to draw in consumers. 
  • Design and layout skills – sourcing and editing photos as necessary and ensuring that they are properly laid out, content specialists have an eye for presenting visual material. 
  • Experience with a CMS preferred (WordPress, Silver stripe, etc.). 
  • Knowledge of web analytics (i.e. Google Analytics) preferred, and testing platforms a plus. 
  • Strong business acumen with analytical skills, data-driven and problem-solving thinking. 
  • Experience in web design and user experience and Adobe Creative Suite a plus. 
  • Must be able to work flexible/unconventional hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends and holidays, as necessary. 
  • Detail-oriented and exceptional organizational skills. 
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks effectively and time/resources efficiently. 
  • Self-starter spirit with the ability to execute assigned tasks and projects with minimal supervision. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with other team members.
