This position is located at the Rockford campus which is 90 miles northwest of the Chicago campus. Responsible to create, prepare and produce on both Mac and PC platforms routine and complex graphic artwork for a variety of programs associated with the College of Medicine Rockford and the UIC Health Sciences Campus-Rockford.

Duties:

  • Review rough copy and type and/or scan text into the computerized system, layout and design into final format for a variety of projects, including print, e-mail, web and other digital formats. This process includes the selection of type, size and style, placement and text treatment. 
  • Create designs through conceptualization from clients requests, rough copy, raw data or drawings for complex brochures, publications (newsletters, booklets, magazines), collateral material, signage, displays, handouts, slide presentations (PowerPoint), advertising, large format posters and other instructional informational materials. 
  • Develop complex illustrations, graphics and logos for use in various projects and help to develop and implement graphic standards and style guides. 
  • Develop final artwork incorporating various design elements (text, graphics, screens, photographs, illustrations, etc.). Review possible production techniques and materials with supervisor and other production staff. 
  • Consult with clients regarding specifics of job requests. Select formats, color use and effect options, paper, ink and finishing possibilities, etc. 
  • Develop specifications for projects and solicit bids from outside vendors and in-house print shop. 
  • Work with vendors, printers and in-house press operators to ensure specific methods are used. 
  • Maintain project files, photographs, stock images and other graphics. 
  • Request supplies as needed for the completion of projects. Monitor equipment performance for necessary maintenance and/or repair. Responsible for the maintenance of all materials, supplies, equipment and production areas used in the performance of duties. 
  • Document time and materials required for each job necessary to invoice clients. 
  • Take or scan photos and use PhotoShop and other programs to retouch, resize and otherwise prepare photos for display. 
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Any one or any combination that equals thirty-six (36) months from the categories below:

[1] (a) credit for progressively more advanced college or art-school course work that would lead to a major in graphic/visual arts communication and/or design

  • 60 semester hours equals 12 months
  • 90 semester hours equals 24 months
  • 120 semester hours or a Bachelor’s Degree equals 36 months

[1] (b) work experience and/or on-the-job training that provided a knowledge of progressively more advanced, generally accepted principles, theories, practices, and methods used in graphic designs and their applications to visual communications problems that are/is comparable to the trainingprovided in theprograms such as graphic/visual arts communication and/or design

AND

2. Twelve (12) months of progressively more responsible work experience and/or training comparable to that performed at the Graphic Designer Assistant level of this series.

Salary starts at $34,573 but is commensurate with experience.
