The Communications Manager is responsible for developing and managing programs that increase the awareness and favorable image of the SSM Health Dean Health Plan brand. This person will lead the strategic planning, budgeting, tracking and alignment efforts for communications at Dean Health Plan. The Communications Manager manages the regional, Madison-based, and Janesville PR/communications team and works with the regional executive team, and entity/service line leads to plan and implement internal and external communications plans in support of the overall system goals. The manager oversees regional communications including but not limited to: Internal Communications, Media Relations, Public Relations, Crisis Communications and Community Relations. In collaboration with the Director, Marketing and Communications, the manager will guide all network-wide communication activities, generate new and innovative communication and public relations strategies, and lead communication collaboration across Dean Medical Group andSSM Health of Wisconsin and external partners.

Overall Responsibilities:

1. Champion the communication efforts for SSM Health Dean Health Plan that promotes and protects the brand internally and in the marketplace that includes:

  • Serving as a corporate representative/spokesperson for the media
  • Leading the development of new and innovative communications strategies that positions SSM Health as the market leader and industry change agent.
  • Leading the charge for planning, execution, tracking and reporting of an integrated communications strategy that delivers on the SSM Health corporate goals across internal communications, corporate relations, external media partnerships, public relations, and community needs.
  • Collaborating with key stakeholder groups to develop, manage and execute annual internal and external communications plans, as well as monitoring and reporting the results as needed.

2. Manage the operations of the Communications team, which will include all human resources responsibilities, budget monitoring and tracking, scheduling time off, workflow, performance management and employee development.

3. Work with the digital services team to craft a network-wide e-communications strategy, drive implementation and tracking of communications on the corporate intranet, consolidating intranet functions for the region.

4. Cultivate new and maintain healthy relationships with current partners from various media disciplines (traditional-print/radio/TV, electronic-E-mail and social-blogs, and communities.).

5. Lead the crisis communication protocol for SSM Health that ensures all SSM Health leadership is well prepared for crisis situations and the brand is positioned favorably.

6. Lead efforts to raise awareness and perception of the senior leadership team locally, regionally and nationally by seeking public and media relations partnerships.

7. Provide consultation to executives, leaders, and regional communications staff with regards to internal communications, media relations and community relations.

8. Integrate the mission, values and vision of SSM Health into organizational messaging to ensure consistency.

9. Maintain integrity and consistency of the organizational brand standards and coordinates with Marketing staff to ensure proper alignment between marketing and communications strategies.

10. Manage the overall media and social media platform for the region, working with internal stakeholders to identify and pitch stories to the media.

11. Track communications trends, ensuring best practices are adopted and implemented when appropriate.

12. Collaborate closely with Dean Medical Group in pursuit of integrated healthcare communications.

Required:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field. 
  2. Minimum of 6 years of progressively responsible experience in communications or related field, with at least 1 year in a leadership role. 
  3. Knowledge of and previous experience in media and/or public relations with proven track record. 
  4. Knowledge of and previous experience in internal communications, including change management and executive communications, with a proven track record 
  5. Team oriented and recognizes that marketing, digital services, communications, cause marketing and PR are highly integrated in the new marketing paradigm, commitment to close collaboration in planning, program development and measurement. 
  6. Proven success in leading the building, implementing and tracking of an integrated communication plan. 
  7. Ability to think and execute under challenging time pressures & crisis situations. 
  8. Possess excellent writing and communications skills. 
  9. Highly articulate, with seasoned interpersonal and public speaking skills. 
  10. Ability to engage others, develops and maintains effective relationships, and builds a strong network of contacts within the community. 
  11. Proven ability to develop innovative and results-oriented business presentations 
  12. Active experience monitoring the pulse of social media, and a passion for staying current with social media trends. 

Preferred:

  1. Degree in Journalism or Communications. 
  2. Universal Accreditation in Public Relations (APR).
