Job Summary:

The Executive Communications Manager will be a lead content creator for 3M’s senior-most executives, responsible for producing compelling, high-quality external, digital and internal communications aligned with 3M’s purpose, vision, values and priorities. We are looking for an exceptional writer who can work with senior leaders and key subject-matter experts to brainstorm, craft and deliver thoughtful, compelling scripts for keynote presentations, social media, video content, and written communication. The individual in this role will also work closely with designers to create graphics and slides of the highest quality and ensure flawless execution and delivery. Close collaboration with senior-level executives is required, in addition to various communications teams and partners across the business, such as Marketing, Social Media, Public Relations, Employee Communications, Government Affairs and Investor Relations, etc.

Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Crafts compelling content on behalf of senior executives, translating technical jargon into meaningful stories that enhance and protect 3M’s reputation 
  • Builds and executes communication strategies that align with 3M’s vision and strategies 
  • Works cross-functionally to write impactful speeches, scripts, talking points and other written materials for various executives 
  • Ensures content and concepts extend into other communication efforts across the broader 3M Communications team 
  • Oversees and directs agencies and partners on communications projects, presentations and executive events 
  • Stays up to date on current affairs that may be relevant to executive communications and builds a solid network of subject-matter experts to provide background, opinions and clarification 
  • Partners with the Social Media team to maintain executives’ social media presence, ensuring real-time response as required 
  • Partners with internal communications teams to develop content for internal communications, including talking points, news articles, presentation slides, multi-media, scripts, etc. 
  • Partners with Public Relations team to identify external speaking engagements and media opportunities that support core messaging platform, in partnership with communications teams 
  • Partners with outside agency consultants to deliver on executive communications strategies and plans

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher (completed and verified prior to start) from an accredited institution 
  • Minimum of five (5) years of combined experience in Marketing, Communications, Branding, and/or Advertising in a private, public, government, or military environment 
  • Experience working with senior executives in a private, public, government, or military environment 
  • Experience with Speechwriting

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher preferred in Business Administration, Marketing, Journalism, English, Advertising, Public Relations, and/or Mass Communication from an accredited university 
  • Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Five to seven years of corporate and/or business communications experience 
  • Curious and willing to learn, but also driven to excel and deliver results 
  • Strong research capabilities with resourcefulness in gathering information from various sources 
  • Experience developing compelling stories through presentation materials 
  • Strong collaboration skills 
  • Experience managing agency relationships 
  • Ability to translate strategic plans into execution of detailed tactical communication plans 
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with ability to persuade others in matrix environment 
  • Customer-/client-centric mindset combined with contagious enthusiasm and passion 
  • Project management skills with strong ability to manage details for precision and accuracy 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with flawless application of grammar and AP style 
  • Ability to develop relationships at all levels of an organization and across functions with a collaborative work style but a bias for action 
  • High ethical standards, able to manage very confidential information 
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment 
  • Fluency in multi and social media - video production, digital communications
