The Managing Editor will oversee the daily operations of alumni publications for the Wisconsin School of Business (WSB) including Update magazine and the School's annual report to investors, Together Forward. As part of the Alumni Relations team for WSB, the Managing Editor will also be accountable for determining the best strategies and platforms for delivering information to WSB alumni and assisting in the development of stewardship communications by working closely with various members of the External Relations team.

The Wisconsin School of Business employs over 80 faculty and over 250 staff members in support of its programs, which include an undergraduate program, a range of graduates degrees, and executive education offerings. The mission of the Alumni Relations team is to understand the needs and goals of our more than 40,000 alumni and nearly 5,000 donors to create effective engagement, marketing, communications and fundraising strategies to meet our goals. We utilize a variety of channels to deliver our communications including, but not limited to, email, direct mail, web and social media.

Editorial Planning and Publication Management (70%)

  • Lead, develop and maintain editorial calendar
  • Lead development of content ideas, coordinate and secure subjects and assign stories to writers
  • Manage budget for publications
  • Identify new opportunities for storytelling 
  • Hire and schedule freelance photographers
  • Utilize and update information in CRM system based on alumni interactions
  • Verify facts and determine when content is ready for publication

Writing and editing (25%)

  • Develop and refine content for group stewardship efforts 
  • Assist in the crafting of strategic communications from the Dean's Office
  • Proofread articles 

Other Duties as assigned (5%)

Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, marketing or related field.

2 years of experience in a communications, content development, marketing, public relations or relevant role required.

Proficiency with written English language and grammar required.

Candidates should have experience writing, editing, and developing content marketing strategies to tell a story in addition to the desire to learn and contribute in a fast-paced environment.

  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of editorial processes, publication standards and branding
  • Demonstrated creativity and idea generation that's on strategy and produces clear, effective content
  • Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure and prioritize multiple priorities
  • Ability to proactively identify project issues and seek out solutions 
  • Knowledge of The Associated Press (AP) Stylebook and the University of Wisconsin-Madison Editorial Style Guide preferred
  • Ability to gather and interpret research and data from primary and secondary sources
  • Strong attention to detail and desire for accuracy
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the desire to collaborate
  • Ability to proactively lead a project and motivate team members
