Position Summary:

The Marketing and Communications (Marcom) Executive is responsible for creating and executing innovative marketing strategies that build and enhance ASA’s brand, increase patient and professional awareness of the role of the physician anesthesiologist, working with Member Services to drive member recruitment and retention, and support the sales of ASA’s portfolio of products and services. The Marcom Executive will manage three teams under a new Marketing and Communications umbrella: Marketing, Public Relations, and Publications & Digital Content. Working collaboratively with ASA’s Chief Operating Officer, this position will guide the overall direction of the Marketing and Communications department activities while supporting ASA’s overall vision and strategy.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a cohesive, growth-oriented, ROI-positive Marketing and Communications strategy that supports ASA’s broad portfolio of products, services and initiatives. 
  • Develop clarity around roles and responsibilities among the members of the Marketing and Communications team. 
  • Set shared goals and identify appropriate measurement methodologies so the three teams are in alignment on priorities. 
  • Take a leadership role in identifying the organization’s marketing technology needs, and then developing a roadmap, budgeting and executing on the plan. 
  • Drive toward a shared culture of collaboration and accountability among teams that have not previously worked closely together. 
  • Be the owner of the ASA brand, responsible for its written, visual and experiential representations. 
  • Create marketing and communications strategies that will enable ASA leadership to cultivate and enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences, including key media, legislators and regulators, industry influencers, partners and others as needed. 
  • Identify emerging issues faced by the specialty, such as the opioid crisis, and work with relevant ASA teams to develop communications solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them. 
  • Provide input and subject matter expertise to a variety of staff committees. 
  • Lead internal meetings on both strategy and tactical execution and collaborate with multiple stakeholders across the organization to meet department objectives, including Member Services, Advocacy, Education, Meetings & Exhibits, Corporate Relations & Business Development, Anesthesia Quality Institute, and others as needed. 
  • Investigate best practices and keep apprised of industry changes that affect efforts.

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications or related area required. Master’s degree preferred. 
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant business experience. Healthcare, association or media audience development experience preferred. 
  • Minimum 5 years of Senior Managerial or 3 years of Director experience. 
  • Experience with marketing, communications or membership preferred. 
  • Proven communication and leadership skills, with demonstrable success in integrated marketing campaigns across digital and traditional media channels. 
  • Experience working with organizational volunteers and Boards of Directors preferred. 
  • Proven leadership experience; ability to influence and engage direct and indirect reports and peers. 
  • Strong mentoring and coaching experience.

Travel Required:

  • Yes. Under 10% air travel required.
