Under the direction of the Director of Communications and Media Relations, the Marketing Communication Specialist performs general duties to include marketing and promoting the university, in accordance with MSOE's established policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as a brand journalist for MSOE, identify and create story and photo opportunities for use on MSOE's owned channels and in public relations efforts.
  • Managing editor of Dimensions magazine: concept, write, edit and proofread articles and serve as project manager for the full-color university magazine. Cull information from students, staff, faculty, alumni and Regents. Work with in-house graphic designers and freelance photographers to coordinate artwork.
  • Write compelling, results-oriented content as well as edit and proofread a number of university marketing pieces: booklets, signs, flyers, brochures, advertising, advertorials, website, radio spots, correspondence, books and other materials.
  • Gather information, write copy for and disseminate four university electronic newsletters every month. Work with Alumni Affairs, Enrollment Management and IT to improve click-thru and open rates and publish relevant content. Also work with the MSOE Development and Alumni Affairs to develop email event invitations and giving campaigns. Stay up-to-date on email policies, performance metrics, and industry best practices. Assist university departments with e-newsletters as needed.
  • Assist with maintenance of website copy, including updating profiles and developing new content as needed.
  • Assist director of communications and media relations to promote media coverage of university activities and students as needed. This may include writing news releases, pitching stories to the media, tracking story placements, feature writing, advertorials, ad placements, etc.
  • Assist with creating content for social media initiatives. May require some evening and weekend monitoring and management of social media.
  • Work closely with team members and university partners to deliver a strong, consistent and cohesive brand identity and voice across all communications.
  • Serve as an expert, detail-oriented project manager who collaborates effectively with key stakeholders across campus to develop high quality, engaging and error-free communications.
  • Monitor higher education enrollment and marketing trends, tools and opportunities, and apply them to MSOE, when appropriate, to further enhance the university's marketing communications presence.
  • Assist with development and project management of marketing-related projects.

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in a creative services area, marketing, advertising, public relations, communications or media relations and a bachelor's degree in journalism or a communication-related field.
  • Demonstrated experience writing for different styles: Web, e-newsletters, print and journalistic.
  • Knowledge of Web standards, social media, design concepts, best practices and usability, a must.
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills are necessary.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills, ability to multi-task and willingness to learn new skills.
  • Familiarity with analytics is a must.

Language Skills:

  • Excellent writing, proofreading, communication and organizational skills that will be used in a variety of university marketing materials, both print and digital.
  • A passion for grammar, accuracy and be a stickler for AP style.
  • The ability to write for a variety of audiences and environments and infuse creativity while staying clear and concise.
  • Communication skills to work with a variety of people such as project team members, faculty, staff, students, Regents and alumni via email, telephone and face-to-face.
  • Knowledge of and demonstrated experience implementing email marketing and web standards and best practices.
  • Thorough working knowledge of tools and technology for web development, Google Analytics, email marketing, email reporting and social media reporting.
  • Familiarity with and understanding of HTML.

Mathematical Skills:

  • Ability to use and adapt to new software including the Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Suite, social media and email distribution and analytics platforms. Must be able to compile and analyze statistics that measure the performance of marketing, social media and communications efforts.

Reasoning Ability:

  • Top-notch organization and project management skills, able to juggle multiple tasks; you'll work in a team environment to conceptualize and coordinate projects, as well as write and edit articles.
  • Creativity to lead your team to new heights, and suggest and implement improvements.
