The Position:

The Marketing Communications Coordinator is the primary public relations and social media staff person at the Museum. Responsibilities include leading all efforts related to public relations and developing social media strategies and tactics to maximize the Museum’s digital footprint. He/She will work directly with the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development and will be responsible for communicating the Museum’s mission across all traditional media and social platforms to drive awareness, engagement, and visits to the Museum.

Specific job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Public Relations (PR)

  • Through research, networking and other means, continually develop and foster relationships with local and national journalists/influencers to gain coverage and create PR/social opportunities 
  • Expand Museum’s public profile by writing press releases and in-depth pitches tailored to individual reporter beats. 
  • Facilitate press coverage through the development of editorial calendars, talking points, and interviews 
  • Raise visibility of Museum exhibitions, educational programs and services, events, and leadership 
  • Apply for institutional awards and pitch results to local media 
  • Pitch media sponsorships and gain in-kind advertising and coverage 
  • Slate photographers for exhibit openings, programs, and fundraising events; review and choose photos to be distributed for post-event press coverage; distribute to relevant publications 
  • Report PR coverage and social media impact

Social Media

  • Execute a comprehensive social strategy developed in conjunction with the Vice President of Marketing and Business Development 
  • Maximize social exposure for Museum events and programs through the production of content including interviews, videos, blogs, streamed events, etc. 
  • Post Museum activity on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter; maintain appropriate ratio between selling and informing; use boosted posts appropriately to drive additional engagement 
  • Create ongoing dialogue with visitors who have engaged with the Museum’s social sites. 
  • Actively listen to social media, developing strategic responses. 
  • Engage with influencers/celebrities to educate about the Museum’s mission and showcase Museum activity 
  • Stay up to date on platforms and other trends in social media. 
  • Research additional platforms (GatherVoices, CrowdRiff, etc.) and pursue digital partnerships as appropriate

General Marketing and Administrative

  • Work collaboratively with departments across the Museum related to communications 
  • Support Vice President of Marketing and Business Development in preparation of Board materials related to area of responsibility and support other department tasks

Personal Attributes:

IHMEC seeks an organized, creative, flexible, and detail oriented employee who is comfortable with a range of responsibilities and possesses a “can do” attitude. He/She needs to be a strong communicator with outstanding written and oral communication skills. Someone who is comfortable taking initiative and can relate to a range of people will be successful in this position. Passion for museums and history is preferred.

Professional Requirements:

  • BS/BA in one of the following majors: Marketing, Communications, Journalism, PR, or related field 
  • 3-5 years PR and social marketing experience 
  • Proficiency in use of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and other social tools 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office 
  • Knowledge of video editing, Adobe InDesign, and Photoshop preferred 
  • Candidate must be available evenings and weekends as required 

Physical Requirements:

May need to climb up and down stairs; to bend, stoop, and lift or move materials and retrieve files; to pull/push, lift, and carry up to 25 pounds; and to reach both above and below shoulder height.
