The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee is seeking to fill a full-time vacancy for a Media Relations Specialist and Writer.

UW-Milwaukee’s University Relations Division is hiring a media relations specialist and writer to report and write stories for the university’s news site, connect external journalists with faculty experts and provide other media relations services. Job requirements are a bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or related field; three years of experience working as a reporter with a daily news organization; and three years of experience working in multi-format (text, photo and video) team environments.

Preferred candidates will demonstrate their ability to meet deadlines; ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment; strong news judgment and ability to develop story ideas; ability to successfully pitch ideas for news stories to other reporters or editors; excellence in writing and editing; knowledge of AP style; ability to gather data for news stories; two or more years of experience with a major regional or national news organization; experience working as a fact-checker; experience working with WordPress or a similar content management system to update a news website; experience working with HTML email systems (such as Emma, Constant Contact, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, English, communications or related field
  • Three years as a reporter with a news organization that has daily deadlines, such as a wire service, newspaper, television station or online news site
  • Three years of experience working in multi-format (text, photo, video) team environments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines
