The Membership & Development Intern will assist with the development and implementation of strategic plans for growing membership levels for the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. This role will support organizational efforts to onboard new members and retain existing members of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce. This is a tremendous opportunity for students seeking experience in nonprofit management, business, marketing and communications, or experience working in a professional LGBT organization.

This position is part-time, between 10-15 hours a week. The expected duration of this internship is one semester (fall). The intern schedule is flexible and can accommodate a student schedule, however consistency and dependability are necessary to the successful completion of this internship.

The Membership & Development Intern reports to the Managing Director. This position requires the ability to work independently as well as part of a team. The intern will be expected to interact with Chamber members and may at times be asked to work cooperatively with other staff. Training and support will be offered and available to the intern throughout the duration of the internship.

Major tasks of the position include:

1. Assist with the management and upkeep of our membership database (40%)
a. Learn the basics of ChamberMaster (our membership-management software) and seek ways to maximize the utility of current membership management systems
b. Enter and update member records in database as needed (e.g. calling members to verify information is accurate and up-to-date, assisting with the creation of membership profiles, etc.)
c. Assist in generating and analyzing custom lists and membership reports

2. Collaborate with staff to develop and implement new member outreach campaigns (35%)
a. Work with staff to develop marketing materials for prospective members (including online marketing, email marketing, and direct marketing)
b. Under the direction of the Managing Director, research, collect and compile information useful to membership development efforts
c. Help create new and update existing promotional materials including mailing materials, flyers, slides, sales sheets, etc.
d. Prepare and distribute bulk membership mailing materials such as applications, new member packets and postcards

3. Work with staff to improve membership experience for current members (20%)
a. Help develop and implement a strategy for check-in with members at important benchmarks (e.g. midway through membership)
b. Call and invite members to participate in Chamber events and programs
c. Compile and organize membership information included in orientation intake forms into cohesive format

4. Help collect feedback from past Chamber members (5%)
a. Reach out to past members to collect feedback on membership experience and ways in which the Chamber can improve operations (via e-mail survey or phone call)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) Qualifications

  • Interest in LGBT issues, nonprofit management, business, marketing and/or communications 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Docs preferred
  • Some experience with database management and/or data entry a plus but not required, willingness to learn new systems
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to think creatively and analytically
  • Strong interpersonal skills, must be comfortable on the phone and interacting with the public
  • Organized, dependable and detail oriented
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team
  • Skills in graphic and/or website design and online/social media tool management are a plus, but not required 

Requirements

  • Has earned or is pursuing degree in relevant field; or comparable work experience 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of member information 
  • Available to work 10-15 hours a week during the semester (schedule is flexible between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday - Friday)

This is an unpaid internship; however, interns are eligible to receive college credit.
