The Programs & Events Intern will assist with the planning, logistics and implementation of the Wisconsin LGBT Chamber of Commerce’s programs and events. The Chamber hosts a number of events over the summer, including Out In The Kitchen, Pride Business Showcase, Business Leaders Breakfast, and more.

Programs of the Chamber include our various industry-councils, such as the Hospitality Council, Real Estate Council, Financial Services Council, and more, as well as the LGBT Workplace Alliance which connects corporate employee groups. Other programs include our Emerging Leaders LGBT College Mentorship Program and our Business Leadership Academy.

The Programs & Event Intern, working closely with both the President & CEO and the Managing Director, will assist with planning at every stage of the process; from conception to completion. This is a tremendous opportunity for students seeking experience in nonprofit management, marketing and communications, business, event planning, or experience working in a professional LGBT organization.

Major Duties & Tasks:

1. Assist with the planning and implementation of the Chamber Industry-Councils (30%)
a. Work with the President & CEO to develop resources and supporting materials for Council meetings
b. Help plan Council meetings, prepare for events, and assist in necessary follow-up

2. Assist with the planning and implementation of Emerging Leaders’ programming (30%)
a. Work with the Managing Director to develop resources and supporting materials for our 2019-2020 Emerging Leaders LGBT College Mentorship Program (including conducting research, compiling information, and creating and/or editing documents)
b. Help plan professional development opportunities, events and workshops for both mentees and mentors to enjoy for the duration of the Emerging Leaders Program
c. Seek out resources and opportunities in the community that could be valuable to Emerging Leaders (this may involve reaching out to partner organizations and other members of the public)

3. Help with the planning and implementation of Chamber events (40%)
a. Work with staff to plan and organize event details such as scheduling, contacting venues, organizing guest lists, sending out invitations and arranging catering services
b. Develop promotional and marketing materials for Chamber events (including online marketing, email marketing and direct marketing)
c. Create surveys and analyze feedback from Chamber members after events

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA) Qualifications:

  • Interest in LGBT issues, nonprofit management, event planning, business, marketing and/or communications 
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Excel, and Google Docs preferred 
  • Some experience in event planning a plus but not required; willingness to learn 
  • Strong communication skills (written and verbal) and the ability to think creatively 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, must be comfortable on the phone and interacting with the public Organized, dependable and detail oriented 
  • Able to work well independently and as part of a team 
  • Skills in graphic and/or website design and online/social media tool management are a plus, but not required 

Requirements:

  • Has earned or is pursuing degree in relevant field; or comparable work experience 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of member information 
  • Available to work 10-15 hours a week (schedule is flexible between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. Monday - Friday)

This is an unpaid internship; however, interns are eligible to receive college credit.
