Black Arts Fest MKE is a recently announced, new, large-scale special event taking place this summer. We are looking for an energetic, dedicated intern that meets or exceeds the requirements outlined for the position. This event has the support of major foundations and organizations in the Milwaukee area who believe this event has the ability to help transform the landscape in Milwaukee. Applicants for this position should have a passion for the city, its people, and the desire to grow the diverse festivals, events, and entertainment options that Milwaukee summers are all about.

Special Event Intern:

Black Arts Fest MKE is a new, large-scale event is seeking an unpaid Special Event Intern. This position is multifaceted and will be an integral part of the event’s production. Areas of focus to include: content and image development for social media platforms; website management; assistance with public and media relations; direct contact and interaction with event partners/sponsors, entertainers, board of directors, the public and vendors are required both prior to, during and following the event.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Create a social media marketing plan immediately upon hire 
  • Develop engaging content for social media (posts, videos, graphics, hashtags, etc.) 
  • Adapt event’s marketing campaign to fit the needs of social media platforms 
  • Schedule, shoot and edit videos on a variety of subject matter
  • Assist with vendor relationships, monitor and ensure fulfillment of contractual requirements, etc. for booth food and retail operators
  • Assist with media relations as appropriate
  • Other duties as assigned

To meet the needs of this internship you must meet the following:

  • Organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills 
  • Ability to interact with a broad range of personalities 
  • Self-starter that learns quickly and can work in an efficient manner without direct supervision 
  • MUST be able to work under tight deadlines 
  • Use of a reliable car 
  • Own a laptop equipped with software to meet the position responsibilities 
  • Tri-pod for smart phone (preferred) 
  • Previous experience managing social media 
  • Marketing and/or special event experience and/or studies a plus 
  • Ability to dress and act professionally in an office setting 


Time Requirements:

Flexible schedule (15-25) hours per week (days/early evenings preferred); ability to work some evening hours if supervisor is present. Weekly hours will increase late July/early August. Commit to an internship that begins immediately!

Education & Experience:

  • Event production experience preferred but not required
  • College courses in marketing, public relations, social media, hospitality or similar preferred

Compensation & Benefits:

  • This is an unpaid internship and is eligible for academic credit as defined by the academic institution 
  • Covered parking provided by employer 
  • Ability to build extensive and diverse portfolio (event will own all material work product, but intern can use authorized work in portfolio)
