JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Employer Engagement and Marketing Specialist will support the SOA’s efforts to expand opportunities for actuaries to apply their skills in more varied roles within and outside of their traditional insurance and employee benefit roles. The senior business development and employer relations specialist will assist in creating and executing new and creative strategies and tactics to expand opportunities for actuaries. The strategies, based on research and best practices, will vary for each type of profession the SOA is exploring. The senior business development and employer relations specialist will also write persuasive materials strategies targeted at a variety of audiences, develop relationships with prospects via phone and in-person meetings and identify potential prospects to contact.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Assist in the development and execution of business development activities and marketing campaigns to promote actuaries in nontraditional roles that lead to new employers of actuaries 
  • Participate in and contribute to strategy development sessions 
  • Perform market research through online research, networking and outbound calls to identify prospects and the appropriate contacts within the organizations and to gain business intelligence that helps to build effective marketing strategies 
  • Monitor tactical results, measuring them against set objectives and metrics, and creating reports and making recommendations for future steps. 
  • Write persuasive materials for approaches and pitches to prospects including backgrounders, presentations, emails, fact sheets, web content and talking points that address prospect needs, concerns and objectives, and write materials to promote nontraditional roles to members, candidates and students 
  • Establish rapport and build relationships with prospects via email, calls and visits ensuring action is taken and leads are followed through 
  • Schedule in-person and over-the-phone meetings with key decision makers; other SOA staff, leaders and SOA business development leader and subject matter experts may participate in meetings as well 
  • Monitor and update SOA web content related to marketing nontraditional roles to ensure relevance and timeliness (working with the SOA web team) 
  • Enter each prospect in contact management database if not already existing, research and update contact details of potential prospects, and enter activity details and schedule follow-up activities in the contact management system 
  • Work with the marketing and public relations firms on marketing strategies 
  • Prepare relevant reports for various business development activities 
  • Provide support to the SOA Cultivate Opportunities Team, which is a task force comprised of board members and other volunteers 
  • Coordinate with volunteers and staff as needed to advance mutual goals in a focused and effective manner 
  • Coordinate effectively with other SOA areas to achieve optimal support and promotion for business development activities 
  • Plan and participate in trade shows or other events where prospects in the targeted industries meet 
  • Work effectively within a “not-for-profit,” service oriented, association environment

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Bachelor's degree in comunication, marketing, journalism or related field (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will be considered) 
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of experience in communications, marketing or business development 
  • Experience working in customer relationship management and networking preferred 
  • Experience working on technical subject matter preferred 
  • Experience formulating and implementing marketing plans a plus

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills, adapting communication styles as needed for the various audiences and a variety of media 
  • Ability to digest complex information quickly and to develop clear communications on that information to various audiences 
  • Strong organizational and project management experience that demonstrates a high level of accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Excellent relationship and interpersonal skills to work collaboratively with SOA staff and build rapport with prospects and volunteers 
  • Exhibit strong initiative and ability and willingness to understand and support strategic and operational initiatives of the SOA 
  • Ability to learn quickly, demonstrate critical thinking and make situation-appropriate decisions using sound judgment
